A Rather Haphazard Selection Of Imagery Created Over The Past Year
(Words And Comments On This Page Were Completed Prior To Two Hurricanes--Obviously, Louisiana's Wetlands Are Much, Much More Imperiled--This IS The Most Serious Problem Facing The State Of Louisiana)

Louisiana...........A Southern Jewel Of Natural Resources........Forty Percent Of The Lower 48's Wetlands...........Swamps, Rivers, Bayous, Creeks, Hardwoods, Hills And Flatlands......Oil, Gas, Salt, Sulphur, Agriculture, And On And On...........Even Led The Way In Getting The American Alligator Off The Endangered List...........Somewhat Successful In Reintroducing The State Bird, The Brown Pelican..............A Fishing And Hunting Mecca(Except For That Big Dead Spot In The Gulf Off The Mouth Of The Mississippi).........Also, Along With Neighboring Mississippi And Alabama, A State That Is On Or Near The Bottom Of Virtually Every "List" Imaginable..........From Education And Health To Corruption And Crime..................Environment Doesn't Fare Too Well Either..............I Think A Recent News Account On The Murder Rate In New Orleans(Reportedly Almost Ten Times The National Average) Pretty Much Tells It All.......One Of The Universities Was Doing A Study On Response Of Residents To Gunfire In Their Area.............New Orleans Police Fired 700 Blank Rounds Into The Air On One Particular Afternoon In One Of The Neighborhoods To See What The Response Would Be............No One Called

Solutions--Remove Levees(Not In Just A Few Locations And Spillways) With Few Exceptions Except In Critical Areas.....Open Up The Richness Of The "Mighty Mississippi"...........Wetlands Will Be Restored.............Sure, Short Term Cost To Industry And In Instances, Individuals.....Long Term--A Growing, Healthy Coastline--And A State That "Bit The Bullet" And Led The Way

The Dead Zone Off The Louisiana Coast Is The Second Largest In The World....Virtually No Oxygen Breathing Species Can Live Within This 8,500 Square Mile Area..Size Is Increasing And Will Continue To Do So As Coastal Wetlands Decrease(Wetlands Are Great Housekeepers, Neutralizing Or Diminishing Pollutants....To A Point).........Major Causes Of Condition Are Runoff Of Nitrogen-Phosphorous Rich Fertilizers, Manure, Sewage And Air Emissions From Vehicles And Industry........Obviously, Louisiana Serves As A Dumping Ground For Much Of The Nation By Way Of The Mississippi River...........In Order To Save The Gulf, We Must, Must, Save Our Coastal Wetlands
